The material of a walking cane directly affects its weight and durability. When selecting a cane, it is important to consider both the elderly person’s physical strength and the environment in which it will be used:
1. Material Selection:
Aluminum Alloy: The most common choice, lightweight yet sturdy, reasonably priced, and suitable for most daily use scenarios.
Carbon Fiber: The lightest option (some weigh as little as 0.19 kg), with high strength, but relatively expensive; suitable for seniors with limited physical strength or those sensitive to weight.
Wood: Traditional and aesthetically pleasing, suitable as a gift or for indoor use, but relatively heavy; slip resistance relies on rubber pads on the bottom.
2. Key Selection Criteria:
Height Adjustment: The appropriate height is when the elderly person is standing in shoes with arms hanging naturally, the handle should be level with the wrist crease, or the elbow should be bent at approximately 30 degrees.
Anti-slip design: The base must have rubber anti-slip pads with grooves for drainage, and the handle surface should feature a textured grip to ensure a secure hold.
Weight control: The recommended weight for a walking cane is between 250–350g. If it is too heavy, it will be difficult to use; if too light, it will feel unstable and lack a sense of stability.
